Ready. Set. WRITE! Week 8

By / Jessica Leake / 20

I was invited to participate in Ready. Set. Write! by my CP and best friend Mandie, which makes sense since we’ve already been checking in with each other on our WIP goals. It’s been so helpful have some accountability and encouragement, and that’s what Ready. Set. Write! is all about–writers encouraging one another this summer to meet their goals. This year, it’s hosted by Katy Upperman, Jamie Morrow, Alison Miller, and Erin Funk. Check out their blogs for more information and be sure to link up each week.

How I did on last week’s goals:

So I slacked off a bit last week because I was distracted by this:

photo1 (5)The ARCs for Arcana arrived in NYC! This is both terrifying and exciting because reviews and blurbs will be forthcoming. But aren’t they gorgeous?? Now that they’re out in the world, I put up chapter one here if anyone is interested!

As far as goals, I did manage to work on my edits for my Irish/Viking WIP. I need a new title for it, too, and I’ve been struggling. *grumbles about titles*

And here’s another question for all of you regarding edits: what do you find is easier–going through the whole document and marking up everything that needs to be edited first, or just working through chapter by chapter? I have the editorial letter from my agent, but I couldn’t decide if it was easier to go through the whole thing and make notes, or if that would take more time than just going through it chapter by chapter.

As for reading goals, I’m reading three books at the moment: The Burning Sky (still, because I don’t get to read hard copies of books that often), Siege and Storm, and More Than Music.

I did manage to get out all my thank you notes, so yay! I’m guilt-free now :).

Goals for this week:

I’d really like to knock out these edits, but it’s a lot of work, so we’ll see. I want to at least be halfway finished by the end of the week.

Finish at least one of the books I’m reading.

The biggest challenge I faced this week:

Distraction! I’ll probably be dealing with that more and more the closer it gets to my pub date–but at least it’s a good distraction!

Thanks for all the encouraging comments! I hope everyone has a productive week! 🙂

I really like FROM BLOOD TO ASHES! I struggle with coming up with perfect titles too — I think they’re so important! Best of luck with your edits, and congrats on winning our giveaway! I just got your email, so I’ll put your package in the mail ASAP. Have a great week, lady!

Thanks, Katy! Titles are so important to me, too…I just wish I was better at them. I’m so excited about the care package! Thanks again 🙂

      Yes! 🙂

I hear you on the distraction thing. Anytime I actually sat down to attempt to write, I was all over the map concentration-wise. I think I jumped up out of my seat to do this or that about twenty times. Love the cover! Your ARCs look so great! Good luck getting through your edits this week! 😀

Thanks, Jaime! I’ve been jumping out of my seat to run around and do chores–anything but these edits ;). I’ll have to focus!

Oh wow, your Irish/Viking WIP sounds awesome, as does the title FROM BLOOD AND ASH! And the cover of ARCANA is gorgeous! I hope you sort out how you want to work on your edits and that they go smoothly! Also, congratulations again on winning our giveaway this week. At least you’ll have some treats to enjoy while you tackle the editing! 🙂

ARCs! How awesome! And I really like that title, I say keep it! =) And I’m more of a go through and mark what I need to change first, and then start going through chapter by chapter type of girl. Happy writing this week!

    • Jessica / July 29, 2014, 8:36 am

Thanks, Leandra! I think I may do that as far as the edits…keeps it a little more organized. 🙂
