Ready. Set. WRITE! Week 9

By / Jessica Leake / 12

RSWgoldpolaroidI was invited to participate in Ready. Set. Write! by my CP and best friend Mandie, which makes sense since we’ve already been checking in with each other on our WIP goals. It’s been so helpful have some accountability and encouragement, and that’s what Ready. Set. Write! is all about–writers encouraging one another this summer to meet their goals. This year, it’s hosted by Katy Upperman, Jamie Morrow, Alison Miller, and Erin Funk. Check out their blogs for more information and be sure to link up each week.

How I did on last week’s goals:

First of all, a big thanks to Katy Upperman for my fun (and delicious! Loved the chocolate and chai tea 😉 Writer’s Care Package: IMG_1463

My 22-mo-old daughter loved digging through the box and playing with the tissue paper, too, so bonus! 🙂

As far as goals, I did manage to work on my edits for my WIP. I met my goal of getting halfway through them, so yay!

I actually read two books this past week: More than Music by Elizabeth Briggs and Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo.

Goals for this week:

My agent is actually out of the office until Friday, which is good, because it takes some of the pressure off me to get these edits finished like, yesterday. (this is all internal pressure of course…my agent is very patient ;). But I still want to have them finished by the end of the week–14 chapters to go.

Email my publicist with all the things she needs from me.

Read another book.

Easy, right??

The biggest challenge I faced this week:

Distraction! Lots and lots of distraction. Now that the Arcana ARCs are out in the world/ available for download on Edelweiss, I keep obsessively checking Goodreads for reviews. And, over the weekend, my sweet 5-mo-old baby came down with this awful fever…no other symptoms really, just this fever that barely responded to fever reducers. His highest temp was 102.2, so he was pretty miserable, and comfort for him means Mommy lying down with him and nursing any time he’s awake. Luckily, my husband was home all weekend to take care of my other two kids. His fever finally broke Sunday night, but he still wasn’t himself (happy and easy-going) until this morning :(.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments! I hope everyone has a productive week! 🙂

Distraction is justified. I can only imagine how distracting reviews would be. Even if you aren’t checking them, I’m certain you’re thinking about them. Exciting and nerve racking I’m sure!

Good luck with your goals this week! I hope you accomplish mucho!

Exciting and nerve-wracking for sure! Thanks, Alison…hope you have a productive week as well 🙂

So sorry to hear about your little guy. Fevers are scary when they’re that young. Glad he’s getting better. Can’t wait to take a look at Arcana!

They’re definitely scary at this age! My oldest had febrile seizures, so it makes me even more paranoid any time any of them have fevers. And thanks! Hope you will 🙂

Oooh! You’re brave to be checking all those reviews! I would be scared silly! I’m pretty sure if I ever get published I will have my husband check them out and only show me the encouraging ones. Glad you’re over the hump with the baby being sick. That’s never any fun. :/

I know, right?? I’m sure with that first negative review I’ll swear off all others, but right now I just can’t help myself.

I’m glad your son’s okay now. Poor thing.

I just read the blurb for Arcana—sounds great! Good luck getting past the distractions this week and hitting your goals!

Thanks, Tracey–me too! :). I was excited to see you liked the blurb for Arcana! Hope your week is productive as well.

Oh man, that’s so tough when babies are sick and you don’t know what’s wrong. Hope your little guy is feeling much better now! Great job on getting halfway through your edits, especially considering the Mom duties on top of that! Good luck plowing through the rest of your edits this week!

    • Jessica / August 4, 2014, 8:23 pm

Thanks so much, Erin! He seems to be feeling a lot better :).

  • Leandra Wallace / August 5, 2014, 10:49 am

Glad to know he’s on the mend! I won the care package from last week, so I think I’ll share a pic too when I get it, that’s a neat idea. =) Good luck w/your revisions- and taming that internal pressure! 😉

Thanks, Leandra! Congrats on winning the care package–it really brightened my day when I received mine :). Hope you have a productive week!
