Ready. Set. WRITE! Week Five

By / Jessica Leake / 23

I was invited to participate in Ready. Set. Write! by my CP and best friend Mandie, which makes sense since we’ve already been checking in with each other on our WIP goals. It’s been so helpful have some accountability and encouragement, and that’s what Ready. Set. Write! is all about–writers encouraging one another this summer to meet their goals. This year, it’s hosted by Katy Upperman, Jamie Morrow, Alison Miller, and Erin Funk. Check out their blogs for more information and be sure to link up each week.

How I did on last week’s goals:

I finished my edits on my WIP and sent them off to my agent–now I’m doing what writers are worst best at: waiting.

I finished reading Ignite Me, and I enjoyed it overall (gave it 4 stars on Goodreads), but I did feel like the ending was a little rushed, especially since they had been talking/anticipating that battle for the entire book. I love Warner’s character, but I was confused as to why she decided to make Adam just a complete ass in this book. It seemed a stretch for his character, though she tried to justify it. But like I said, I LOVE Warner, so I was happy enough with that :).

I ended up getting the edits for ARCANA on Thursday, and I had them finished by Friday! The only reason I was able to was because I took the kids to my parents’ house, and they watched them while I wrote. If I was home alone with them, there would have been NO WAY I could have worked on edits all day! Not with an attention-seeking toddler and preschooler , and an infant ;). My editor is amazing though, and they weren’t very difficult edits at this point. I had to write the dedication and acknowledgments as well–I definitely had ALL the feels. The whole thing is becoming very real now! My acknowledgments are ridiculously long, so I hope they let me keep them that way; I have a lot of people to thank.

Goals for this week:

Read another TBD book–I’m trying to refill the creative well at this point!

Possibly work on edits for my WIP if my agent gets them back to me this week.

Catch up on emails–I’m so behind!

Complete any last-minute tasks my editor gives me before the ARCANA ARCs go to print (EEEEEEEEEEEK)

A favorite line from ARCANA:

(This is an exchange between the two MCs–Lord Thornewood and Katherine–on the night they first meet)

“Have I offended you?” Lord Thornewood asks, but his face reveals not a shred of contrition. “I shouldn’t be surprised. You young debutantes are all just a bundle of emotions in pretty packaging.”

“Are we indeed? I dare say it’s assertions like that which result in ambitious mamas parading their carefully groomed daughters before unappreciative men.”

A spark of amusement appears in his dark eyes. “You seek to prove me wrong then?”

“Perhaps if I had any interest in the game, I would trouble myself to take on such an endeavor. Unfortunately, I do not.”

The biggest challenge I faced this week:

This week it was keep the kids entertained and happy while still finishing up edits!

How exciting to send your edits to your agent! Hopefully you won’t have long to wait because you’re right, it is the worst part 😉

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 2:40 pm

Thanks, Dawne! Good luck this week 🙂

I love your excerpt! I haven’t read a historical novel for a while. I need to remedy that. Have a great week!

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 2:40 pm

Thanks, Karyne! You should definitely remedy that 😉

Ooh! You are looking for a new book to read? Based on the little excerpt from your WIP and the fact that you like the Shatter Me series, have you read THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas? It’s the first in a historical fantasy series. Good stuff.

Good luck with all your goals this week!

Ok, this is so weird…but I’m actually reading that right now! I just picked it up from my local bookstore ;). Great rec!!

I love your snippet! And, I have to say, I had the very same reaction when I finished IGNITE ME. It felt like she could’ve used another book in the series so the last book didn’t need to be so rushed. She needed to do a major flip flop to make us love Warner and hate Adam in the last book and it was a tough sell – too rushed. Have a great week!

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 2:42 pm

Thanks, Kitty! And yes, you summed it up perfectly! I kept thinking as I got closer and closer to the end…surely there would be another book…? But, nope.

A week to just read?! NICE! Write some words for me.

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 7:58 pm

You’re so right! I basically have a week to just read! *laughs gleefully* And yes–ARCs!!!

  • Alison Miller / July 7, 2014, 5:13 pm

Everything you said about IGNITE ME – same! And yay for ARCANA going to print! How exciting for you! Good luck with your goals and have a great week!

      Thanks so much, Alison!

  • Crystal Schubert / July 7, 2014, 6:43 pm

I still haven’t read IGNITE ME, but um, if it’s skewing Warner then I need to get my hands on it ASAP. I <3 him. And how exciting that you're getting ARCs soon!!

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 7:59 pm

I love him, too! I devoured Unravel Me. And thanks! I’m SO excited.

  • Laurel Holman / July 7, 2014, 7:34 pm

Oooh, beautiful dialogue! I’m so impressed that you are doing all this with three little ones around. Amazing. Best to you as you move through this exciting stage! Have a good week.

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 8:00 pm

Thanks, Laurel! It can be challenging sometimes, but I’m blessed to have a lot of help from family :).

  • Leandra Wallace / July 7, 2014, 7:52 pm

Ooh, I love lords and ladies type books! Grew up reading Regency romances. =) Good luck this week!

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 8:00 pm

I did, too, Leandra! And thanks, hope your week is productive!

  • sara / July 7, 2014, 8:27 pm

Katherine’s sass is so fun! I love her snark 🙂 Here’s to a good week ahead!

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 9:02 pm

      Thanks, Sara! 🙂

  • Margo Berendsen / July 7, 2014, 8:57 pm

What delicious repartee between your two characters!!

I struggle to find time to write without the kids around distracting me too. Sometimes putting on headphones works (with older kids – wouldn’t try this with toddlers!!!!)

    • Jessica / July 7, 2014, 9:03 pm

Thanks, Margo! Yes, I imagine the house would be destroyed if I tried to block them out with headphones ;).

  • Jennifer Pickrell / July 8, 2014, 9:47 pm

That’s so exciting that you’ll have ARCs soon!

    Have a great week 🙂
